Mixed precipitation events of snow and rain occur in Grass Valley, but substantial snow fall events have become less common over time.

Climate Change and Nevada County

California’s climate is changing.  All of the state is becoming warmer. Heat waves are becoming more common, and snow is melting earlier in spring. Snow events are less common than they used to be and more precipitation falls as rain.

Large scale events such as El Nino and La Nina change the weather from year to year, so there are exceptional events like droughts and heavy snow storms, but the trend is to a warmer existence.

Nevada County is no exception with warmer summers becoming the norm.  Over the last 50 years there has been a warming trend of just under one degree fahrenheit a decade.

Atmospheric Rivers and Nevada County

Atmospheric rivers, essentially large conduits of moisture in the atmosphere, have led to considerable rainfall events in Nevada County. With a warming climate the expectation is that there will be an increase in the frequency and intensity of atmospheric river events in California in the future.

These events have the capacity to impact Nevada County in a number of ways including eroding slopes, causing road damage, and flooding. Minor category atmospheric rivers can be beneficial to Nevada County as they bring an increase in precipitation, without the destructive effects.

Snow and Nevada County

Nevada County varies in elevation from 1000ft in the west up to 7000ft and this variation also causes extreme variations in the amount of snow that falls, together with the origin of the storm systems themselves. The main towns of Grass Valley, Nevada City and Truckee are located at 2400ft, 2500ft and 5800ft elevation respectively. With the majority of the snowfall coming above the 2500ft line, only Truckee gets considerable snowfall every year.
